Rebuy Tournament Strategy. In general, you should always re-buy and add-on when possible. So why not just stop there? Well, I think there is some strategy to playing and winning re-buy tourneys. First, we have to segregate the tourneys into manageable chunks. Here is how I divide them: Freerolls with re-buys. Now, in a rebuy tournament with the same amount of players, the prize pool will begin at $100,000, but due to rebuys, it will increase dramatically. Hypothetically, if 1000 players each re-bought three times, the prize pool will increase from $100,000 to $400,000. The chips you get at the start of the day are all you can buy for that tournament. Many poker tournaments, particularly those with buy-ins of $100 or less, let you rebuy one or more times during the first hour of the tournament. First up, the Dawson City League of Lady Wrestlers presents the North End Knockout on Saturday, August 6.
On Sunday, August 7, the best female pokers players in the Yukon gather to play it out for prize money.
Why are there these all-women events in what are thought of, by some, as male-dominated pastimes?
The idea of bringing female wrestling to Dawson City started in 2013 as a way for women to celebrate feminine identities, question traditional gender stereotypes, and for a bit of physical fun, as well.
Yasmine Renaud, Kimberly Edgar and Andy Pelletier are this year’s event producers for the North End Knockout.
They encourage participants to choose what type of personality they would like to portray. It can be their own identity, or an alter-ego. Its up to the women to develop the characters, as little or as much as they want.
Renaud herself has developed an over-the-top personality. As a wrestler she is Reverend Annie Goodfellow, an evangelical preacher from the Southern US, a strong woman, a bigot and running mate of Donald Trump.
“Annie and I are not the same person – I don’t agree with her, but she’s powerful,” says Renaud.
She points out that by developing a character rather than portraying yourself, you have more control as to how you’ll be perceived, something that doesn’t always happen in real life.
“There are some interesting choices,” she says. “Most women want to be the loud and rude bad ones. Maybe this is reflective of societal oppression of women. If you’re shy in real life, you can let loose with the personality you choose. You can be anything you want and try out different identities.”
In the end, says Renaud, wrestling is the medium for a message that women can make noise and take up space.
She says that she’s seen women grow stronger as they get louder.
“We get together and share common experiences and in the meantime, gain confidence as well.”
This is the league’s fourth fight. Attendance to the fights grows every year. Renaud says they’re all proud of the show and love the community support the league of lady wrestlers receives.
“Everyone has a great time and usually leaves with a smile on their face.”
There is just as much fun to be had at the Ladies Poker Tournament, says Thomas McCabe, director of the tournament. It takes place at Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall and started years ago in order for women to play together and not necessarily have the pressure or intimidation of playing with men. The tournament lasts for four to five hours and is no-limit Texas hold ‘em, one of the most popular forms of poker.
Entry fee is $125, which buys a player 500 tournament chips. Each table holds a maximum of 10 players. Once in the game, players are also able to build their pot for an additional $50, but when that’s gone, they can’t buy any more chips.
“It goes until the last woman standing,” says McCabe.
Size of the groups have varied over the years. This year, they’re expecting up to 20 players, mostly from Dawson City and other Yukon communities.
There are lots of regulars, but new players are always welcome, says McCabe.
“It’s a fun introduction to poker.”
The drink of choice during the tournament is mimosas, made up of champagne and orange juice.
“We go through lots of champagne,” says McCabe.

Yes, craps is a “negative expectation” game. But what does that mean, exactly? Gamblers and mathematicians like to talk about bets in terms of their “expected value.” The expected value of a bet is a simple formula, too:
(The amount you stand to win X the probability of winning) – (The amount you stand lose X the probability of losing) = Expected value of a bet
You bet $2 on a coin flip, but if you win, you only get $1. You have a 50% chance of winning $1, which amounts to 50 cents in expected value. But you also have a 50% chance of losing $2, which amounts to -$1 in expected value. Subtract one from the other, and you get an expected value of -$0.50.
It should be obvious that if you flip a coin repeatedly long enough under those terms, you might get lucky in the short run, but you’ll go broke in short order in the long run. (“In the long run” just means “eventually.”) All casino games design their odds of winnings and payouts to provide you with a negative expectation, by the way. Blackjack has its fans, and I understand why. But craps is my game, and if you have the right personality, it’s probably your game, too. It’s fun, scary, exciting, suspenseful, and the most entertaining game in any casino which offers it. One of the reasons it’s so great is this buffet of bets I just talked about, by the way.
At most craps tables, you’ll find a huge crowd of players yelling, stuttering, and moaning over the results of any throw of the dice. Some players want to win a lot of money on a small bet. They might bet that the outcome of the next roll will be a 2 (“snake-eyes”). That pays off at 30 to 1, so even a measly $5 bet pays off at $150.
Other players like to play a close to even game with an even-money payoff. Those players will bet on the pass line and take as big an odds bet as they can. If you can find a casino offering you the option of betting 10X odds, the house edge for all the money you have in action on that combination of bets is only 0.184%.
The house edge, by the way, is just another way of expressing the expected value. In this case, it’s the amount of money the casino expects to win from each bet over the long run. If the house edge for a bet is 1%, the casino expects to win $1 on average every time you bet $100. With a house edge of 0.184%, your expected loss on a $100 bet is only 18.4 cents—less than a quarter!What I Hate about Craps, Though
The large variety of bets is a 2-edged sword. It’s a feature but also a drawback. With such a large number of bets to choose from, it’s easy to choose bad bets—wagers with a high negative expectation. In fact, when it comes to craps, there are far more bad choices you can bet on than good ones.What does this mean in practical terms? It means if you choose the right bets, you can play for a long time on very little money. You can also get reasonable odds of walking away a winner during any given gambling session. Games of chance are streaky, and with a low house edge, the probability of having a winning streak is better.
But if you choose the wrong bets—the wagers with the highest house edge—you can lose your entire bankroll faster than you ever thought possible. The best way to think about how the casino makes its money at craps is to realize that one of 2 things is always happening with a craps bet:
*The casino wins more often than the player on an even money proposition
*The casino gets a cut of our winnings on any bets that you win
These are 2 sides of the same coin. Let me explain how those concepts work to make the casino a fortune:
The most common bets in craps are the pass line bet and the come bet. These are the most basics bets in the game—bets that the shooter will succeed. In the long run, over 495 “rounds,” the casino will win either of those bets on average 251 times. The player will only win an average of 244 of those bets. That’s a difference of 7 bets over the course of 495 rounds of play (7/495 = 1.41%). By taking the odds bet, you can reduce that even further. In a casino where you can take 10X odds, the house edge is reduced to 0.18%, and in a casino where you can take 100X odds, the house edge is reduced to 0.02%.This means with $100 in action, you’re looking at losing an average of just 20 cents or just 2 cents, respectively. That’s a lot of entertainment, cheap. It’s also a great possibility of winning, because you don’t need standard deviation to fall far the other direction to come out ahead. Of course, a lot of casinos only allow 2X odds. That’s okay, even though it’s not great. It still reduces the house edge to 0.61%. Let’s talk about the casino’s cut of winnings, too. It’s best explained using an example—the worst bet at the craps table.The Any 7 Bet Is a Great Example
The “any 7” bet is a one-roll bet that the next roll will be a 7. You have 6 ways of making a 7 when rolling 2 dice:
*1, 6
*2, 5
*3, 4
*4, 3
*5, 2
*6, 1
That means the probability of winning this bet is 6 divided by 36. (There are 36 possible outcomes when you roll 2 6-sided dice.) This means you’ll win 1 bet out of 6, which also means that your odds of winning are 5 to 1. If you bet $10 repeatedly on the “any 7” bet, you’ll lose $10 on 5 rolls out of 6, or $50.If you were playing in a “break-even” game—one where the payout odds and the odds of winning were the same—you’d get 5 to 1 on your money, meaning you’d win $50 on the one roll out of 6 where you won. Since you lose $50 and win $50, you break even. But the casino wouldn’t make any money that way. What the casino does, instead, is take a cut of those winnings. Instead of paying off at 5 to 1, this bet pays off at 4 to 1, which means you’ll win $40 and lose $50, for a net loss of $10 over those 6 dice throws.
The house edge on that bet—the average that you mathematically expect to lose on it—is 16.67%. For every $100 you bet, you’re expected to eventually lose an average of $16.67. That’s a big sum compared to the $1.41 on the pass line bet, or the 61 cents on the pass line bet with 2X odds. This bet is often called “big red.” (I have an ex-girlfriend with the same nickname, but I won’t get into that here.) Since red is the color accountants use for negative numbers on a spreadsheet, this bet is appropriately named. You can analyze any bet in craps this way.The Field Bet Is another Great Example

You have a total of 16 ways to make those numbers, out of 36 possible outcomes. That sounds pretty good. Also, most casinos pay out 2 to 1 if you get a 2 or 12. The field bet is still a lousy wager, though. The casino still has 22 ways to win compared to your 16 ways to lose. Even with the doubled payouts on the 2 and the 12, the casino comes out way ahead here. The house edge for this bet is the same as the house edge for an American roulette game—5.26%.The Hard Way Bets
Some craps players love long odds, though. These guys make “hard way” bets. A popular fictional character who does this is featured in the movie Hard Eight, which I recommend you see if you haven’t already.
You can make the following hard way bets:

*Hard 6
*Hard 8
*Hard 10
These are called “hard way” bets because you’re betting that the corresponding total will be rolled as doubles—a pair of 2s for a total of 4, a pair of 3s for a total of 6, a pair of 4s for a total of 8, or a pair of 5s for a total of 10. You’re also betting that this will happen BEFORE the shooter rolls either a 7 or the corresponding total the “easy way.” For example, if you bet on “6 the hard way,” if the shooter rolls a 1, 5; a 2, 4; a 4, 2; or a 5, 1.The odds of winning this bet are 10 to 1. There are 10 ways to lose. There are 6 ways to lose by rolling a 7. And there are 4 ways to roll a 6 the easy way. The payoff when you win, though? 9 to 1. Bet $10 on 6 the hard way 11 times, and you’ll lose 10 times, or $100. On the roll you win, you’ll win $90. This means you’ll lose $10 net on 11 bets, or 9.09%.Right Bettor Wagers, Payoffs, and the House Edge

A “right bettor” is someone who bets with the shooter. (It’s the opposite of a “wrong bettor.”) Basically, all the right bettor wagers are bets that the shooter will succeed before rolling a 7.
Whirl – This is the horn bet and the any 7 bet combined.
It’s actually more complicated than some other craps bets, because the payoffs depend on which number wins. For example, if you roll a 7, the payoff is actually nothing, because it’s treated as a push. (This is a tie where your bet is returned to you without any winnings.) That’s because when you win the any 7 bet, you’re still losing the horn bet.
On the other hand, the 2 or 12 pay off at 26 to 5, and the 3 or 11 pay off at 11 to 5. It’s a complicated bet, and the house edge is high. Don’t bet it. Some casinos and players call it the “world” bet. Your odds of winning are 2 to 1. The house edge is 13.33%.Odds Of Winning Craps At Casino
2 – This is a one-roll bet that the next number rolled will be a 2. The odds of winning are 35 to 1, but it only pays off at 30 to 1. The house edge is 13.89%. This is also called “snake eyes.”
12 – This is a one-roll bet that the next number rolled will be a 12. The odds of winning are 35 to 1, but it only pays off at 30 to 1. The house edge is 13.89%. You’ll notice that the odds are the same as for the 2 bet.
Hop (doubles) – The hop bet isn’t listed on the table. It’s one of those “secret” craps bets. A hop bet is a wager that the dice will fall on a specific combination. In this case, we’re looking at doubles, so a 4 on the hop (doubles) would be a bet that the dice would land on 2, 2. (Yes, this is the same as a 4 the hard way.)
There are 2 big differences between betting on the hop and the hard way. A bet on the hop is a one-roll bet—you win or lose on the next roll. A normal hard way bet stays in action until it’s won or until the total is rolled (or a 7 is rolled.) That’s the 1st difference.
The 2nd difference is that the hop bet has a different payout. The odds of winning a hop bet are 35 to 1, but it pays off at 30 to 1. The house edge is 13.89% on this one, too.
Horn – This is a bet that the dice will land on 2, 3, 11, or 12. The odds of winning are 5 to 1. The payoff depends on the specific total, though. A 2 or 12 pays off at 27 to 4. A 3 or an 11 pays off at 3 to 1. The house edge on the horn bet is 12.5%.
Hop (not doubles) – This is a bet on a specific combination, like 4 on the hop that consists of a 3 and a 1. Since you don’t have to roll doubles, you have twice as many ways to win on the hop if you don’t choose doubles. This makes the odds of winning 17 to 1, and the payoff is 15 to 1. The house edge is 11.11%.
3 – This bet, like the hop bet that isn’t based on doubles, has odds of 17 to 1 of winning. The payoff is also 15 to 1, and the house edge is also 11.11%. This bet is also called “ace deuce.”
11 – This is the same as the bet on 3, but it wins if you roll an 11. The odds are the same as for a bet on 3.
Any Craps – This is also called the “3 way.” It’s a bet that the dice will land on 2, 3, or 12. The odds of winning are 8 to 1, and the payoff is 7 to 1. The house edge is 11.11%. Any craps is a one-roll bet.
Hard 4 – This is a bet that the dice will come up 2, 2 before coming up with a total of 7 or another total of 4 not comprised of doubles. The odds of winning are 8 to 1, the payoff is 7 to 1, and the house edge is 11.11%.
Hard 10 – This has the same odds of winning and same payoff odds as a hard 4, but you’re betting on the dice coming up 5, 5 instead of 2, 2.Chances Of Winning Craps At Casino
C&E – This is a combination of the any craps bet and the yo bet. The any craps portion of the bet pays off if you hit 2, 3, or 12. The yo bet pays off if you hit an 11. Big 8 – This is just a bet that the shooter will roll an 8 before rolling a 7. The odds are the same for big 8 as they are for big 6.
Place 4 – This is a bet that the 4 will come up before the shooter rolls a 7. The odds of winning are 2 to 1, and the payoff is 9 to 5. The house edge is 6.67%.
Place 10 – The odds are the same as for the place 4 bet, but you’re betting on a total of 10 coming up before the shooter rolls a 7.
The Field – I wrote about the field bet earlier in this post. It’s a bet that the dice will land on 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12. The odds of winning are 5 to 4, and the payoff is even money, unless you roll a 2 or 12. If you roll one of those, you get a 2 to 1 payoff. The house edge is 5.26%.
Place 5- This is a bet that the 5 will come up before the shooter rolls a 7. The odds of winning are 3 to 2. The payoff is 7 to 5. The house edge is 4%.What Are Your Chances Of Winning At Craps

More importantly, I’ll start offering some advice about which bets you should actually be placing on a regular basis.

The larger number of bets available at the craps table is one of the more confusing aspects of the game. The casino makes its money from craps by making sure they’re going to win more often than you do or by paying you at odds lower than the odds of actually winning. Kah-Nee-Ta Resort first started by a non-Indian doctor who owned land around the hot springs of the Warm Springs River. In 1961, the Tribes purchased the land back and started to rebuild the spa. In 1971, the Tribes began construction of the Kah-Nee-Ta Lodge using funds from low-interest loans from the Economic Development Administration (EDA). Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects designed the lodge. Today it stands as an example of seventies architecture with strong Indian and Scandinavian influences. The gigantic fireplace in the lobby represents all of that: raw concrete, Indian symbols and Artichoke lamps by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen. In 1995, the Tribes expanded operations to include a casino and improved convention center.
In 2001, the resort and casino were combined to form Kah-Nee-Ta High Desert Resort & Casino, which also includes a golf course.
The resort’s casino closed in December 2011 in preparation for moving it to a new property, the Indian Head Casino, on U.S. Route 26, where it would be more accessible to passing travelers.[1] While Kah-Nee-Ta’s casino netted $2–4 million annually, the tribes expected the new location to earn $8–12 million. The resort shifted its focus to its family-friendly amenities, including the golf course and spa.[2]
The resort filed a WARN notice with the state on 7/6/2018, announcing that it plans to permanently lay off 146 employees starting Sept. 5, 2018. Along with the layoffs will come the closure of the resort, which includes a lodge, spa, hotel and RV park.[3] In spite of efforts to maintain operations, the resort closed in September 2018. Whether to cash out it all out at once is your decision. Assuming you are a U.S. citizen you are obligated to declare the income on your next tax return. If you don’t you could be charged with tax evasion. However this sort of thing is largely on the honor system. Zero. You can not deduct a net loss at all. However if you have some W2G forms (generally given on wins of $1200 or more in slots, video poker, and keno) then you can deduct other losses against these wins. You should keep documentation for any losses you claim. You may be thinking of deducting losses on stocks. There you can deduct up to $3000 a year, and can carry over amounts larger than that to the next year. I’m still carrying over losses from the tech crash in 2000.Hello! Although you are obligated to pay taxes on your net win at the end of the year regardless of how many W2G forms you have, a payout of $1200 or more will necessitate a wait and obligate you to tip the person paying you. In less classy casinos a hand pay will also cause the tip vultures to start hovering around you. To avoid all of this sometimes the player should consider deviating from optimal strategy. For example with AAA88 in 10/7 double bonus the odds marginally favor keeping the aces only. To answer your question I’ll assume a four of a kind pays 25 times the bet. Then a four of kind on the deal in a $0.20 50-play game will pay $0.20 * 5 * 50 * 25 = $1250. You will get a four of a kind on the deal once every 4165 hands, on average. If you were to drop the number of hands to 47 the win for a four of a kind on the deal would be 47 * $0.20 * 5 * 25 = $1175, staying under the W2G threshold.By what method do casinos pay you when you cash out? Only single wins of $1,200 or over are subject to withholding. If you won over $1,200 in small wins you would not be subject. When you press the cash out button the machine doesn’t know your citizenship and will just print a voucher for whatever you had. Any $1,200 or over win will always lock up the machine until an employee unlocks it. On high denomination games, usually starting at $10 or $25, the casino may keep a log of all your taxable wins. On a $500 machine, I’m sure they would have somebody standing right next to the machine do the paperwork. When you are done they will give you a single W2G form for the sum, and in your case subtract the withholding from that.How does the taxation (Form W2-G) work on machines whose coin-in values are near or greater than the $1200 threshold? Hypothetically, if a player bet $5000 on a Red, White, & Blue slot machine, and got three blanks, which returns the original bet, would the player get a W2-G?
The W2-G is based on the gross win, not the net win. So, yes, if the player got a $5000 push on a Red, White, & Blue, he would get a W2-G.

In the U.S., any gambling winnings of any kind and any amount are taxable. However, with table games, it is on the honor system to report.Recently I visited Charles Town Races and Slots, betting on the Kentucky derby. A Hispanic guy had hit a good payout on a slot machine for $6,000 and seemed to be having some sort of ID problem. I was in the casino for about an hour. In passing him on the way out, still standing by the machine, he still seemed to be having a problem. My question is if he has no ID (for whatever reason) can he still get the payout? The casino is in the state of WV. Would the rules prohibit a person in the country illegally from betting or wining if he or she has bet?
I forwarded this one to Brian, who is a former gaming regulator, and currently a casino manager. Here is what he said,
The casino would not know that someone was in the country illegally. If he had a valid passport, the jackpot would be honored. The illegal may not know this, be scared or they may not have a valid ID to show. Whenever someone wins $1,200 or more, ID is required for tax purposes. If someone doesn’t have his ID, the jackpot would be held in the cage waiting for them to claim it. In most cases, the person has legitimately forgotten their ID; however, sometimes you run into a problem, such as a minor who was gaming. If he doesn’t claim it, the money has to be added back into revenue because the deduction (jackpot) was never paid or there are abandoned property rules that prevail. Also, like the U.S., most countries tax worldwide income. This is getting out of my area, but I’ll try to help. The IRS web site says that for this purpose, the U.S. has tax treaties with the following countries: Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Russian Federation, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. Note that New Zealand is not on the list.
If you are a resident of one of the listed countries, and you hit a jackpot of $1,200 or more, then you should ask to fill out a form W8BEN. That should reduce, or in most cases, eliminate the withholding.
Even if you are not from one of the listed countries, or don’t fill out the form, you can still get the withholding back by filling out form 1040NR, or the simplified version the 1040NR-EZ.

Title 31 is a regulation stating that the casino should make a record of cash transactions of over $10,000 by a single player in a single day. In such cases, a CTR must be filled out, which stands for Cash Transaction Report. This includes making multiple transactions, adding up to over $10,000. If you cash chips close to, but under, $10,000, the cage will likely want to make a note of it, in case you come back later that day, and go over the $10,000 daily limit.
My advice is to give them what they ask for. You have a lot more to fear by looking like you are avoiding CTRs than the CTRs themselves. In fact, I think there is nothing to fear from a legitimate CTR; the casinos generate lots of them. Personally, I have generated hundreds, to no known detriment. However, it raises lots of attention when you look like you are going out of your way to avoid them. I know one person who was rebuffed when he tried to cash in chips, because he had too many previous redemptions of just under $10,000. So, that is my two cents. Better suited to answer this is ’Brian,’ a current Las Vegas casino manager, and former regulator, whom I like to turn to for procedural questions like this.
In a nutshell, Title 31 is the U.S. Department of Treasury Code designed to prevent money laundering. It requires that certain large cash transactions be reported to the Government. These are filed on FinCEN Form 103 “Currency Transaction Reports by Casinos” (FinCEN is the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network). Casinos are required to report all currency transactions in excess of $10K in a single day. The “day” doesn’t follow the clock − a casino picks their day (e.g., 3 a.m. to 2:59 a.m.).
All Financial Institutions comply with Title 31. Casinos are considered financial institutions because of the types of transactions they perform, which are similar to those of a bank (e.g., check cashing, wires, loans, cash exchanges). Unlike traditional financial institutions, casinos conduct a great deal of transactions with unknown patrons. When you set up your checking account at the bank, you give them all of the necessary information needed to fill out CTRs. However, when cashing chips at the cage, the only way the casino can get this information is to ask. Casinos have to get all of the necessary information to fill out a CTR before the patron crosses the $10,000 threshold. Since the fines for non-compliance are hefty, they make a diligent effort to comply.
Casinos are apprehensive to give patrons too much information on Title 31 for fear of inadvertently breaking the law. Casinos are specifically precluded from aiding patrons in structuring transactions in such a manner as to allow them to skirt the requirements. When you ask questions, they prefer to point to a preprinted informational card and don’t like to discuss the matter for fear of divulging inappropriate information.
Circumventing Title 31 is relatively easy for undocumented transactions (e.g., chip buys, chip redemptions, etc.), but why would you want to? If the casino has reason to believe that you are purposefully conducting your transactions in an effort to avoid the reporting requirements of Title 31, they’ll fill out a Suspicious Activity Report by Casinos form (aka SARC). If a casino learns that you exceeded the $10K threshold and they didn’t get the required information, they will bar you from gaming until they get it. — BrianI have heard that to finance the health care bill, a surcharge will be imposed on GROSS income above a certain point. This will have a big impact on high-level slot players, who accumulate hundreds of W2-G forms, like me. Do you have any insight?

I verified this with Marissa Chien, co-author of Tax Help for Gamblers. For high-level slot players, it is not difficult to rack up W2-G forms in the millions per year. Most of these players will still have a net loss on an annual basis. Past the million point in gross income, the player will pay a 5.4% tax on any win of $1,200 or more, even if there is a net loss for the year. This is just my opinion, but I think that isn’t fair. If we must tax gambling winnings (which they don’t in Canada), it should be on the net, not the gross winnings, on an annual basis. According to page 12 of IRS publication 529 (PDF), the minimum a gambling log should include is:
*Date and type of wager or wagering activity.
*The name and address or location of the gambling establishment.
*Names of other persons present during the gambling activity.
*Amount won or lost.

At first glance, it would seem only logical that a smart player will do better at a game that uses fewer decks, but that’s not always the case when you compare double-deck games with six-deck games. A lot of variables come into play, not the least of which are the rules of the games, the minimum bet size required and the amount of scrutiny the games get from casino supervisory personnel. If you do not count cards, it’s very likely that you’ll be better off avoiding the double-deck games out there. I know some of you may be surprised by that comment, but I make it based upon the fact that many casinos have less liberal rules on their double-deck games, yet they require higher minimum bets. As a result, the casino’s overall edge may be similar to that of their six-deck game, but you’ll have to bet more on every hand for the privilege of playing. Because a non-counter cannot get a long-term edge over the casino, you’ll just be betting more on a consistent basis and the casino will eventually get your $$$.
Now don’t get me wrong here; if the rules are the same, a game using two decks will have a lower casino edge than one that uses six-decks, yet the strategies are almost identical. If the minimum bets are the same (or are at least within your comfort level), then go with the 2-decker. That’s a key point, by the way. The proper Basic Strategy for a double-deck game closely resembles that of a four- or six-deck game, much more so than a single-deck game. The few differences between a two-deck and six-deck game with the same rules (dealer hits or stands on soft 17, double after split is allowed, etc.) lie mainly in splitting pairs and, since pairs are the rarest hands you’ll get, the impact is negligible. I might be wrong about this, so check, but I do believe that the only change is to split a pair of 7s against a dealer’s 8 in a double-deck game. In a six-decker, you don’t do that. Not a hand you’re going to see everyday, either way.
My point is that you can move back and forth between DD and 6D games and not worry that you’re playing improperly, but the big question is whether or not you should. We’ve already covered the non-counter situation, so let’s turn our attention to those of you who do count. Even in this situation, the double-deck game isn’t necessarily the hands-down choice and I’ll show you why as we go along.
For whatever reason, many casinos treat their double-deck games as “premium” games, so they have higher minimum bets, may have less liberal rules, less favorable penetration and are usually watched more closely by the “pit critters”, as we lovingly call them here. Some casinos seem to think that counters are showing up in droves at their DD games and carting off chips by the box load, but that’s not necessarily the case. I know of some games that are very easy to beat, but they are few and far in-between. The reality is that beating the double-decker takes extra effort and some sharp play by the counter. But you came here for answers and I have them.
The primary advantage to playing a double-deck game is the volatility of the count. Unlike a 4- or 6-deck game, the running count, which is converted to the True Count (count per remaining deck) in a DD game can rise or fall quickly, but it’s gone almost as fast, due to the shuffle. That’s obviously good when the count is negative, but no fun at all when the count is “up”. Things happen quickly in a DD game and the wise counter takes advantage, but it requires good skills at converting to the True Count and almost needs some ability to anticipate what’s going to happen, while remembering that we never make guesses when counting
The Key: Penetration
Because a DD game uses only 104 cards, versus the 312 of a 6D game, just a few extra cards of penetration can make a big difference in how well you can do at the game. In my Blackjack School lessons, I tell you that you’re wasting your time if you play at a 6-deck game where less than 65% of the cards are dealt before the shuffle. In a DD situation, 65% penetration is very acceptable, 75% is fantastic and 80% or more is phenomenal. What you’ll more likely find is penetration in the 50% range. Yep, they put together two decks and then use only one of them! I hate it when that happens.
But penetration is really important, so it’s something you need to become familiar with. If you play a DD game where the dealer hits A-6, you may double on any first two cards, double after split, etc. and you use a 1-8 betting “spread” (I’ll explain it later on) and the casino deals only 50% of the cards, your long-term edge as determined by simulations that I ran on Statistical Blackjack Analyzer will be about 0.64%. If the penetration deepens to 60%, the player advantage goes up to 0.95% and at 75% penetration it’s 1.47%. That’s not bad, you know.

A “trick” I stress in my lessons is to leave the table when the True Count drops to -1 or lower, if at all possible. That can be fairly easy to do in 6-deck games and not so easy to do in DD games. Therefore, you have to pretty well accept the fact that you’ll be playing in all counts, which makes the penetration factor even more important.We call this “play all” and the figures above were calculated under those conditions. By the way, you need to remember that simulation software plays Blackjack perfectly and we humans don’t. That’s why I use the term, “theoretical” player edge; that’s about as good as it will ever be, but figure 10% less for purposes of reality.
Getting Started
If you have never played DD games as a counter, you need to do some basic planning first. While they aren’t a world apart from 6D games, here are some differences to consider:
*Many, though not all, DD games are dealt facedown and that requires you to count the cards in a different way.
*Because it will be difficult to leave the table when the count drops, you’ll need to learn more “negative” Basic Strategy variations.
*Many DD games require the dealer to hit soft 17 (I’m going to assume that throughout this series), so there are some Basic Strategy changes needed. You can get them at www.blackjackinfo.com
*With penetration being such a crucial factor, you should first check your local game to see if it’s even worth the trouble. Verify the rules while you’re there.
